Tracy Cox, lead pastor of First United Methodist Church in Pittsburgh, said she’s cautiously hopeful for changes to the rules on ordination and marriage. The congregation, which has long been LGBTQ-affirming, held a commissioning service on April 14 for those attending the General Conference.

But legislative committees last week overwhelmingly approved several proposals liberalizing the church’s stance on sexuality. They included one committee that voted 43-9 to overturn the ban on LGBTQ clergy. A proposal to overturn those bans is headed to the delegates this week, and progressives are optimistic that they have the votes to realize their long-held dream.

St. Michael and all Angels is ready to enter a new season of its rich history. Without a permanent home for the last 10 years, the good people of St. Michael and All Angels broke down their chairs every Sunday as they patiently awaited their new building.

These spiritual practices have had profound effects on billions of people around the globe and have changed not just the lives of those within the Christian community but have transformed the world. If we fully embrace these habits in our lives, it is my expectation that we will see extraordinary things happen at our church. One of the things I love most about our parish is its faithfulness in attendance at worship. In the fifteen years I have been rector, it warms my heart to see families together, week after week, coming together in community to worship the Risen Lord. Our worship is reverent, intentional, and centered on God, and I am so thankful that so many prioritize our Sunday gatherings of thanksgiving. There is nothing more important than centering our lives on Jesus, and the primary way that Christians do this is through meaningful and regular Sunday worship.
After the vote, LGBTQ delegates and their allies gathered on the floor of the Charlotte Convention Center to sing, hug, cheer and shed tears. As they sang liberation songs, “Child of God” and “Draw the Circle Wide,” they were joined by Bishop Tracy S. Malone, the president of the denomination’s Council of Bishops. At Holy Comforter, we are blessed to be stewards of a legacy that we inherited from generations before us, and we have an opportunity to continue that legacy for generations to come. Even small planned gifts can make a big difference in the lives of our parishioners and community. When you recognize your blessings, gratitude naturally follows; and generosity becomes an outward expression of your gratitude. There are many ways to be generous with a gift to further the mission and ministries of Holy Comforter.
We take a three-pronged approach to serving the educational, spiritual and day-to-day needs of our area Hispanic population by offering English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes, a La Misa Sunday afternoon service, and a dual language preschool. Established in 1882 and built the following year, St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church is one of the oldest historically African American Episcopal Church in North Carolina. The mission of Saint Michael's is to provide for the spiritual growth of children, adults, and the community by proclaiming God's good news and living it. On May 8, 1983, the mission’s first service was held at Living Savior Lutheran Church. By August, the parishioners had petitioned the Bishop to name the church and on January 1984, the convention of the Diocese of North Carolina officially named it St. Margaret’s into the union as a Mission.
He described sexuality as a proxy issue for larger debates in the church about the authority of the Bible, the reality of sin and beliefs about salvation. She described the atmosphere in the room as a “Pentecost moment,” in which the presence of the Holy Spirit was palpable. The overturning of the 40-year-old ban on “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” passed overwhelmingly and without debate in a package of measures that had already received strong support at the committee level. Capital campaigns are conducted every few years to fund major and long-term expenses and capital investments in the church. Saint Margaret’s was originally founded to meet the needs of the rapidly growing population of southeast Charlotte.
Christian formation programs for young people are nationally recognized and emulated by many other churches in the region, especially Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and Journey to Adulthood. Each prepares young people for engaged Christian lives in the twenty-first century. The youth teens participate in mission trips, outreach camps, and pilgrimages. But whether that measure maintains church unity remains to be seen. The General Conference comes as the American portion of the United Methodist Church, long the nation’s third-largest denomination, has shrunk considerably. One-quarter of its U.S. churches left between 2019 and 2023 amid conservative dismay over the church’s failure to enforce its LGBTQ bans amid widespread defiance.
One of the many things I am thankful for at our parish are the good people who have come before us, who have sacrificed so much and given us this beautiful setting in order that we might gather and worship the Risen Lord. Not only can this building not be hidden, but the witness that springs forth from its walls cannot be stopped as we strive together to follow Jesus and help build His Kingdom on Earth as it is in Heaven. In a world that is changing so rapidly, the way forward at Saint Margaret’s is to embrace the ancient disciplines of the church that have formed disciples for over two millennia. 30, yet what has sustained God’s people in their common life has been the proven traditions of worship, prayer, service, and the sharing of the Good News of Jesus.
“The energy that’s gone into preparing for and trying to get to this moment can now be refocused,” said Jan Lawrence, the executive director of Reconciling Ministries Network, a group that advocates for full inclusion in the church. “We have a huge opportunity in front of us.” Ms. Lawrence noted that not only were all the group’s goals for the meetings likely to be achieved, but they were doing so in at atmosphere that was notably agreeable, even joyful. Further votes affirming L.G.B.T.Q. inclusion in the church are expected before the meeting adjourns on Friday.
Let me encourage us all to be bold, be public, and be unafraid to take the message of Jesus into the world so that all may know His loving presence. The current building at West Seventh and North Tryon streets was completed in 1895. Construction began under the direction of then rector and later Bishop Joseph Blount Cheshire, Jr., in 1893. The Parish House and chapel were added in 1912; the nave was renovated in 1951 and again in 2010; and an education and office building was added in 1998. When the church was completed in 1895, the congregation acted to open its doors every day as a sanctuary for the people of Charlotte, a practice that continues today. At their most recent meeting in 2019, Methodists voted to tighten an existing ban on same-sex marriages and gay and lesbian clergy. Conservatives in the Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, for example, have formed breakaway denominations in reaction to the acceptance of gay clergy. Catholic Church doctrine forbids same-sex relationships, but Pope Francis has alarmed some traditionalists by allowing priests to bless same-sex couples.
In 2003, the Vestry and Clergy of Saint Margaret’s realized that a new, bigger home was needed. At that time, the Church undertook a Capital Campaign to raise money to build a new home. In the Spring of 2005, Saint Margaret’s relocated to its current facility in Waxhaw, North Carolina. Father Todd’s first Sunday at Saint Margaret’s was August 10th, 2008.
